There’s a difference between hearing God and listening to Him.
Most of us hear. We just don’t follow through. We treat God’s voice like background music, comforting, familiar, easy to ignore the moment life gets loud. And then we wonder why nothing changes. But here’s what I’ve come to believe: the secret to getting better every single day isn’t about doing more. It’s about hearing better. If you’ve been waiting for your life to change while quietly drowning out the one voice that could change it, this one’s for you.
The noise that drowns Him out
Have you ever noticed how loud life is? Not just traffic and notifications, the noise inside. The what-ifs. The should-I’s. The why-me’s. I thought I was listening to God once. Honestly, I was just arguing with myself. My prayers sounded like grocery lists, “Lord, fix this. Lord, handle that. Lord, can You hurry up?” I wasn’t listening. I was negotiating. And one day in the quiet, I felt this whisper: “Be still. I’m trying to talk, but you keep interrupting.”
So before you ask why God feels silent, sit with a gentler question: when was the last time you stopped long enough to notice He might already be there? God doesn’t usually shout over the chaos. He often meets us the moment we finally pause long enough to notice He’s already in the room.
I wanted a map; He gave me a compass.
I used to think hearing from God had to be dramatic. Clouds parting, angels harmonizing, maybe a dove on my shoulder. I’d half-joke, “God, if You really want me to change, could You at least text me the instructions?” But there were whole seasons where I wanted clarity more than I wanted God. I wanted a map. He kept handing me a compass. And I’d stand there frustrated, holding a thing that pointed the right direction, angry that it wouldn’t show me the whole route.
That’s usually how He works, though. He gives the next step, not the entire staircase. Faith is like headlights at night: you only see a hundred feet ahead, but if you keep moving, you’ll see more as you go. So maybe He’s already been speaking, just not in the format I kept demanding. The real question is: am I willing to move on a whisper, or am I holding out for thunder?
You might not be stuck; you might be in class.
I used to think “getting better” meant doing everything right. Journaling at sunrise. Fasting every week. Praying like I was training for a spiritual marathon. But God doesn’t only teach through miracles. He teaches through Tuesdays. Every ordinary day is a classroom, and the hard parts are the curriculum. That coworker who tests your patience? Pop quiz. The unexpected bill? Patience exercise. We ask for peace, and God sends the very people who disturb it, like, “Here’s your lab work.”
So if you feel stuck right now, consider this: what if you’re not stuck, what if you’re just in class, and the bell hasn’t rung yet?
When your blessing is “still in Ohio.”
Have you ever ordered something online and wondered why it’s still sitting in Ohio?
That was me with God’s promises. There was a season where something I’d prayed for felt completely lost in transit. I’d done everything right, prayed, waited, trusted. And still, nothing. Every time I checked for progress, my life was still in Ohio. No updates. No movement. No explanation. I remember thinking, “God… did You forget about this?” But looking back, that delay wasn’t an absence. It was preparation. If the blessing had come earlier, I wouldn’t have been ready to carry it. God wasn’t ignoring me. He was working on me.
So if you’re in an Ohio season, waiting, refreshing the tracking, wondering — you’re not forgotten, and you’re not behind. Sometimes His “not yet” isn’t rejection. It’s protection. What if the waiting you resent is actually the work you needed?
Learning to recognize His voice
Sometimes I genuinely can’t tell whether it’s God speaking or just my own voice wearing a halo. “Was that You, Lord, or was that me after two cups of coffee?” But here’s how I’ve learned to tell the difference: God’s voice sounds like peace, not pressure. It doesn’t always sound holy; sometimes it’s just a reminder to breathe, or a silence that settles you instead of scaring you. He doesn’t rush you. He roots you. And your spirit knows the difference. You learn a voice through a relationship. So maybe the question isn’t “Why isn’t God giving me direction?” Maybe it’s: am I spending enough time with Him to recognize His voice when He does?
One whisper, while He leads the rest
If you’ve been waiting for burning bushes and fireworks, you might be missing Him in the coffee cups and commutes and quiet mornings. He speaks in the ordinary, the nudge to forgive, the song that hits differently, the peace that makes no sense. You don’t have to figure out the whole staircase today. You just have to take the next step. The biggest changes in my life rarely started with a miracle. They started with a whisper that I finally stopped ignoring.
So take a breath, and whisper the only prayer that really starts all of this:
“Lord… I’m listening.”
Because that’s how you get better every single day. Not by doing more. By letting His voice lead the way.
This is Unmoved & Rooted.
Faith that doesn’t rush.
Faith that listens — and follows.
If something in this met you today, don’t rush past it. Sit with it and ask: What is God whispering to me right now? Maybe it’s forgiveness. Maybe it’s courage. Maybe it’s rest. Whatever it is, trust that He’s speaking. And if you want to make it real, drop a comment that simply says, “I’m listening.” That’s your declaration that growth begins in the quiet. We’ll keep having these conversations.
