Week 1 · Day 1
Central Scripture
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28
Reflection
There is a version of life many people live that looks functional on the outside but is quietly exhausting on the inside. You keep showing up. You keep managing. You keep holding the pieces together because letting anything fall feels too costly, too embarrassing, or too uncertain. You have learned how to appear steady even when your interior world is fraying. This is not always hypocrisy. Often it is a survival strategy. Life has taught many people that need is weakness, that vulnerability is risk, and that the best way to stay safe is to stay composed. So you do. You compose yourself. Day after day. Even before God. But Jesus does not invite the composed version of you. He invites the weary one. The word He uses here, weary, is not polite language. It describes someone who has been carrying something too heavy for too long. It describes a person whose strength is genuinely giving out. And He pairs it with burdened, which speaks to weight that has been loaded onto you from the outside, expectation, pressure, obligation, and the grinding work of trying to be enough. To people like that, Jesus does not offer strategy. He offers rest. But rest cannot reach a person who is still performing. Rest cannot settle into a soul that is still in presentation mode. The invitation in Matthew 11 requires something many people find deeply uncomfortable: it requires you to stop pretending you are fine. This is where a 90-day formation journey has to begin. Not with a list of what you are going to improve, not with the best version of your spiritual goals, but with honesty about the actual weight you are carrying. What have you been holding together that is costing you more than you admit? What do you keep managing in silence because naming it feels too exposing? The cost of keeping it together is often paid in places no one else sees, in exhaustion that does not lift, in a numbness that settles into what used to feel alive, in the slow erosion of inner honesty. Jesus sees what the keeping-it-together is costing you. He is not impressed by the performance. He is moved by the weariness beneath it. And He says: come. Not after you have sorted yourself out. Not when you feel more spiritually ready. Not once you have something better to bring. Come now. Come undone. Come as you actually are. That is where this journey begins.
Prayer
Pause: Jesus, I stop performing for a moment and let myself simply be here. Admit: I have been carrying more than I have been willing to name, even to You. Receive: Thank You that Your invitation is to the weary, and that includes me right now. Ask: Show me what the keeping-it-together has been costing my soul. Surrender: I release the version of myself I have been holding up for everyone, including You. Rest: Let me receive the rest You are offering, not the rest I have to earn.
Spend a moment in prayerDaily Step
Sit with God for five quiet minutes and resist the urge to make the time feel productive. Simply be present and let the weariness surface without trying to fix it.
